The BC coast is among the most wild and beautiful in the world. One can only imagine what it must have been like before colonization, and, more telling, before industrialization. It was home to large and thriving Aboriginal communities, many of which which have vanished without a trace. For many years forest reserves stretched along the coast, waiting their turn to be logged but with public opinion against the logging companies much of this coastline has been sold to developers. Canada protects the foreshore by law, and legislates public access but in practice private homes and resorts line up along the beaches with scant public access.
